The Chester Bluecoat Charity is delighted to be able to back a local neuromuscular centre to purchase a vital piece of equipment.

Falls are common for people living with neuromuscular conditions due to factors such as weak muscles, a lack of balance and drowsiness due to medication. The piece of equipment being bought with this grant is a tailor-made inflatable cushion that lifts someone who has fallen. It allows these individuals to maintain their independence and dignity and helps carers avoid back injury.

The Neuromuscular Centre in Winsford supports people living with these conditions to lead a healthy, productive and fulfilling life. There are a wide range of neuromuscular conditions, but broadly they affect muscles and the nervous system and lead to progressive muscle wasting. The centre assists people with the conditions in various ways, such as:

  • Physiotherapy and an accessible gym
  • Offering accessible training courses to those living with neuromuscular conditions, with tutors providing year-round guidance
  • Activities such as baking and canal boat trips
  • Design and print social enterprise where those who live with a condition can work and the profits go back into the centre

Tim Mann, Head of Grant Giving at The Chester Bluecoat Charity, said “This is a great piece of equipment that will hugely benefit the community and reduce inequality for those living with physical disabilities. The Neuromuscular Centre initially applied for a £500 contribution towards the cushion, however we decided that as it was such a vital piece of equipment, we would contribute the entire cost of £2,397.”

There are no other organisations within Cheshire, or indeed the North West, that provide services and support specifically for people living with neuromuscular conditions.

Lyndsey Cannon-Potts, the Grants and Contracts Manager at the Neuromuscular Centre, commented “This is our first ever grant from The Chester Bluecoat Charity and we are thrilled to be awarded it to enable this vital item of equipment to be purchased.

Non-emergency ambulance responses can take up to 8 hours currently, which can leave a person with a neuromuscular conditions, who has had a fall, on the floor for an prolonged period of time if a hoist or additional manpower is needed. This incredible piece of equipment will now allow the team at the Neuromuscular Centre to help and patient and deliver the equipment and necessary care as quickly as possible.
